Synthetic Turf · Decorative Accents

Decorative turf, without a full lawn.

A green accent can belong in a yard without taking over the whole space. A·K installs synthetic turf across Contra Costa County and the greater Bay Area, with the layout, edges and drainage considered together.

Small turf accent area surrounded by gravel, boulders and planting in front of a house

Decorative turf can soften a front yard, follow a walkway or break up a paved area where a full lawn is not wanted. The shape should fit the surrounding concrete, pavers, rock and planting rather than look like an isolated patch. A·K is a licensed contractor based in Martinez. We use our own crews, with no subcontractors.

What's included
  • Front yard ovals and small accent areas
  • Strips, borders and walkway transitions
  • Turf between pavers or stepping pads where suitable
  • Edges coordinated with concrete, gravel and planting
  • Base and drainage planned for the space
  • 18-year manufacturer's warranty on the turf product

Small areas still need a considered base.

A small turf bed still needs support underneath and a route for water to leave. Ground conditions, finished levels and adjoining surfaces affect how the base should be prepared. Turf should not simply cover a low spot that holds water. Where an accent meets paving or planting, discuss both the surface transition and drainage before choosing its outline.

  • Base preparation suited to the ground beneath it
  • Water movement considered beyond the turf edge
  • Finished levels coordinated with adjacent paving
  • Planting and access considered alongside the layout

Ovals, strips and borders

A front yard oval can provide a green focal point while leaving room for gravel and planting. A curved strip may follow a concrete walkway, and a border may soften the transition beside paving. Keep the shape useful as well as attractive: consider where people walk, how planting will grow and whether the remaining beds can still be reached. Not every narrow leftover space benefits from turf; sometimes a simpler edge makes more sense.

Clean edges against adjoining materials

The perimeter is a visible part of a decorative turf layout. Against concrete or pavers, the turf edge should be fitted and secured without leaving an awkward loose strip. Gravel and planting need a clear separation so loose material does not continually migrate onto the turf. The appropriate edge detail depends on the existing surfaces and levels. Review those transitions as part of the design rather than treating them as finishing touches to decide later.

Between pavers or stepping pads

Turf may suit gaps between pavers or stepping pads where the layout allows for secure edges and practical cleaning. It can bring a green contrast to concrete or stone without making the whole area a lawn. The paving still needs its own support, and water needs a suitable route through or around the combined surfaces. Narrow pieces and frequent turns can make fitting more involved, so discuss the pattern before committing to it.

Boulders, rock and planting beds

Turf accents can sit alongside boulders, gravel and planting beds, giving the yard a mix of green surface and living plants. Leave room for plants to mature and keep access to irrigation and planting practical. Around a boulder or rock wall, the outline should suit the actual shape on site. Think about how leaves and loose rock will be removed, particularly where a curved bed creates corners that are harder to reach.

Low maintenance, not maintenance-free

Synthetic turf does not need mowing, but decorative areas still need attention. Remove leaves and debris, deal with spills or pet waste appropriately and follow the turf product's care guidance. Planting beds can shed mulch and soil onto the surface, and nearby gravel may need to be kept back from the edge. The amount of care depends on how the space is used and what surrounds it. Choose a layout that remains easy to reach and clean.

How the free estimate works.

  1. 01

    Describe the accent

Call or use the contact form. Tell us where you want a green accent and which paving, rock or planting you want to keep. Estimates are free.

  2. 02

    Review the surroundings

A site visit considers the shape, access, ground, levels and drainage. We discuss edges and how the turf will meet the rest of the yard.

  3. 03

    Discuss the layout

Review the proposed turf area, base and transitions together. A small accent should make sense as part of the whole landscape, not just on its own.

FAQ

Decorative turf questions, answered.

Straight answers to common questions.

Can turf be used without installing a full lawn?

+

Yes. Decorative turf can be used for small accent beds, strips and borders. The appropriate shape depends on the surrounding paving, planting and drainage.

Can turf go between pavers or stepping pads?

+

It may suit that layout where there is room for secure edges, appropriate base preparation and practical cleaning. Review the paving support and water movement as part of the same plan.

Does a small turf area still need drainage?

+

Yes. Water needs to move through and beyond the turf system. The base, ground conditions and adjoining levels should be considered even for a small accent.

Is decorative turf maintenance-free?

+

No. It does not need mowing, but leaves, debris and spills still need attention. Follow the turf product's care guidance and keep adjoining gravel and planting material from building up on the surface.

What warranty does the turf product carry?

+

18-year manufacturer's warranty on the turf product.
