Concrete patio with a built-in fire pit and seat wall in a landscaped backyard

A good patio is level, drains well, and still looks right years later. We prepare the base properly, reinforce with rebar, slope the slab away from the house, and finish it the way you want — all with our own crews.

What's included
  • New patios and tear-out replacements
  • Compacted base rock and subgrade prep
  • Rebar reinforcement only — never wire mesh
  • Drainage built in, sloped away from the house
  • Broom, stamped, colored and overlay finishes
  • Sealing

Finishes and options.

Patios are where decorative concrete earns its keep. A broom finish keeps things simple and slip-resistant. Stamped concrete adds the texture of slate, stone or brick, and color — mixed in or applied to the surface — ties the patio to your home. If your current slab is sound, a decorative overlay can give it a new surface without demolition.

  • Broom finish for simple, slip-resistant surfaces
  • Stamped patterns with integral or surface color
  • Decorative borders and bands
  • Decorative overlays on structurally sound slabs

What's involved in a patio

We start by laying out the size and shape of the patio and checking how water moves across the yard. If there's an old slab, it's broken out and hauled away. The subgrade is compacted, base rock is placed and compacted, forms are set, and rebar is placed and tied. Then the concrete is poured, finished, jointed and cured. Patios often sit beside fire pits, seat walls or turf, so we plan the edges and transitions as part of the job.

  • Layout and drainage check
  • Demolition if needed
  • Base rock and compaction
  • Forms, rebar, pour, finish and joints

Why patios crack, and how base prep helps

The number one cause of concrete cracking in the Bay Area is expansive soil moving under the slab. Skipping or skimping on base rock is a common shortcut, and it usually shows up later as cracking or settling. A full compacted base, rebar, and control joints at sensible spacing keep movement from turning into wide, uneven cracks.

  • Full base rock layer — never skipped
  • Rebar set inside the slab
  • Control joints to guide hairline cracks

Sealing and care

Stamped and colored patios benefit from periodic resealing to protect color and resist stains. Broom-finish patios can be sealed for a more uniform look. Sweep regularly, rinse spills promptly — especially grease near grills — and keep leaves from sitting on the surface.

Patios as part of a bigger plan

Many patios are one piece of a larger backyard. We also build retaining walls, drainage, pavers, synthetic turf, fencing and outdoor living features, so the patio can be planned together with the rest of the yard by one contractor.

FAQ

Patio questions, answered.

Straight answers to common questions.

Should my patio be stamped or broom finish?

+

Broom finish is simple, durable and slip-resistant. Stamped and colored concrete gives the look of stone, brick or slate. Both are poured on the same prepared base; the choice comes down to look, budget and how the space will be used.

Can you resurface my existing patio instead of replacing it?

+

If the slab is structurally sound, a decorative overlay can give it a new color and pattern without tearing it out. Slabs that are heaving or badly cracked usually need to be replaced.

How do you keep a patio from cracking?

+

Expansive soil moving under the slab is the number one cause of concrete cracking in the Bay Area. We use a full, compacted base rock layer, rebar reinforcement (never wire mesh), and control joints to keep cracking small and controlled.

Will water drain off my patio?

+

Patios are sloped so water runs away from the house, and drainage is planned before the pour.
