A driveway carries cars every day for decades, so the part you never see matters most. We break out the old slab, prepare and compact the base, set rebar, build drainage in, and pour with our own crews — no subcontractors.

What's included
  • Tear-out and haul-away of the existing driveway
  • Compacted base rock and subgrade preparation
  • Rebar reinforcement only — never wire mesh
  • Drainage built into the grade
  • Broom, stamped, colored and overlay finishes
  • Sealing and a written warranty

Why driveways crack — and how we prevent it.

In the Bay Area, the number one cause of concrete cracking is expansive soil moving under the slab. Concrete can't stop the ground from moving, but the right preparation keeps that movement from breaking the slab apart. Skipping or skimping on base rock is a common shortcut in the industry, and it won't show up until the driveway starts cracking or settling later.

  • A full, compacted layer of base rock — never skipped or thinned
  • Rebar placed inside the slab
  • Control joints that guide where hairline cracks form
  • Grading that moves water away from the slab and the house

What's involved in a new driveway

Most driveway projects start with removing the old concrete. From there the subgrade is graded and compacted, base rock goes down and is compacted again, forms are set to final grade, and rebar is placed and tied. The concrete is then poured, finished, and jointed, and the slab is left to cure before it carries traffic. Each of these steps affects how the driveway holds up, which is why we don't hand any of them off to a subcontractor.

  • Demolition and haul-away
  • Subgrade grading and compaction
  • Base rock placement and compaction
  • Forms, rebar, pour, finish and joints
  • Curing before use

Finishes and options

A broom finish is the classic driveway surface: durable, slip-resistant and straightforward to maintain. Stamped and colored concrete gives a driveway the look of brick, stone or slate, often with a contrasting border band. If an existing driveway is still structurally sound, a decorative overlay can refresh the surface without a full tear-out. We'll walk you through which option fits your home and how each one is cared for.

  • Broom finish
  • Stamped patterns and borders
  • Integral and surface color
  • Decorative overlays on sound slabs

Drainage built in

Water that sits against or under a slab works against it. We grade every driveway so water runs off the surface and away from the house, and we plan for where that water goes before the concrete is poured. Where a property needs more than grading, we can tie the driveway into a broader drainage plan.

  • Slope away from the house
  • Planned runoff paths
  • Coordination with yard drainage when needed

Sealing and care

Broom-finish driveways don't require a sealer to perform, but sealing can give a more uniform look and help resist stains. Stamped and colored driveways benefit from periodic resealing to protect color and finish. Clean oil drips promptly, sweep and rinse regularly, and avoid harsh chemicals on the surface.

  • Optional sealing for broom finish
  • Periodic resealing for decorative finishes
  • Prompt cleanup of oil and stains

FAQ

Driveway questions, answered.

Straight answers to common questions.

Do you use wire mesh or rebar in driveways?

+

Rebar only. A·K never uses wire mesh for concrete reinforcement. Rebar is placed inside the slab, where it can do its job.

Why do concrete driveways crack?

+

In the Bay Area, the number one cause of concrete cracking is expansive soil moving under the slab. Proper base rock, compaction, rebar and well-placed control joints keep that movement from turning into wide, uneven cracks.

Can you remove my old driveway?

+

Yes. Tear-out and haul-away of the existing slab is part of a driveway replacement, followed by subgrade and base preparation before the new pour.

Which finishes are available for a driveway?

+

Broom finish, stamped and colored concrete, and decorative overlays on existing slabs that are still structurally sound. We can also seal the finished driveway.

Are you licensed, and do you use subcontractors?

+

A·K is a California-licensed contractor, CSLB #823077, based in Martinez since 1991. Every job is done by our own crews, with no subcontractors.
